How much is a trial lesson?
A trial lesson at Rijschool Fane costs €55 for 90 minutes. It is a real lesson: you drive yourself and get honest advice on how many lessons you will need. Book a trial lesson.
Will you pick me up?
Yes. We pick you up and drop you off anywhere in our area: at home, at work or at university, including TU Delft.
Do I need to pass the theory exam before driving lessons?
No. You can start driving lessons before you pass your theory exam. You do need a valid theory certificate before your practical exam.
How many driving lessons will I need?
On average learners take a little over 40 hours of lessons before they pass. Experience abroad can reduce that a lot. Try the driving lessons calculator for a personal estimate.
I already drive in my home country. Do I still need lessons?
Usually fewer, but some. The Dutch practical exam tests local rules and habits, such as priority to the right, cyclists, trams and roundabouts. A trial lesson shows exactly what you need to work on.
Which driving school in The Hague teaches in English?
Rijschool Fane offers driving lessons in The Hague with an English-speaking instructor available, packages including the CBR exam from €1,472 and a 90-minute trial lesson for €55.
Licences for internationals
Can I exchange my foreign driving licence?
It depends on where your licence was issued. EU/EEA licences can usually be used and exchanged. Some non-EU licences can be exchanged, others cannot, and then you need to pass the Dutch theory and practical exam. Read exchanging a foreign licence in the Netherlands.
How long can I drive with a non-EU licence after moving to the Netherlands?
If you move to the Netherlands with a licence from outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland, you can keep driving on it for 185 days. After that you need a Dutch licence. Check the exact rules for your situation with the RDW.
Can I take the theory exam in English?
Yes. The CBR car theory exam (category B) can be taken in English without an interpreter. For other languages you need a CBR-approved interpreter.
Can I take the practical exam in English?
Usually, yes. Most CBR examiners speak English. If your examiner doesn't, you can bring an interpreter, and that is no problem either: your instructor can come along as interpreter in the back seat.
Do I need DigiD?
Yes. You use DigiD to log in to Mijn CBR, authorise the driving school and fill in your health declaration. You can only get DigiD once you are registered in the Netherlands with a BSN. Read DigiD and Mijn CBR for internationals.
How do I authorise Rijschool Fane at the CBR?
Log in to Mijn CBR with DigiD and authorise driving school number 2200H6. Then we can book your practical exam.
What is the Gezondheidsverklaring?
A health declaration you fill in via Mijn CBR before your licence can be issued. Do it early, as the assessment can take some time.
What are the biggest differences in Dutch traffic?
Priority to the right at equal junctions, lots of cyclists with their own lanes and priority, trams, shark-teeth lines and many roundabouts. Read Dutch traffic rules that surprise internationals.
Prices and lessons
How much does a Dutch driving licence cost?
At Rijschool Fane a complete package including the CBR practical exam and an online theory course costs €1,472 (21 lessons) to €2,430 (41 lessons) for a manual car. You also pay the CBR theory exam fee and your municipality for the licence itself. See what a Dutch driving licence costs.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Silver, Gold and Diamond can be paid in 2 instalments: half at the start and half halfway through, with a one-off €20 admin fee.
What happens to lessons I don't use?
If you stop or pass with lessons left, we refund the unused lessons. Lessons you did take are then charged at the single-lesson rate, minus a €50 admin fee.
How long is a lesson?
A lesson is 45 minutes. We drive in blocks of two lessons, so 90 minutes, which gives the best balance between learning and focus.
Should I learn in an automatic?
If you will mostly drive in the city or in an electric car, automatic is a good choice and often needs fewer lessons. With an automatic licence you may only drive automatic cars in the Netherlands (code 78).
Am I insured during driving lessons?
Yes. Our lesson cars are all-risk insured with Bovemij, the Dutch insurer specialised in the mobility sector, including legal assistance and extra passenger insurance. As a student you are well protected during every lesson and on your exam.
Can I cancel a lesson?
Yes, free of charge up to 24 hours in advance. Lessons cancelled within 24 hours are charged in full.
Where do you teach?
Our English pages cover The Hague, Delft and Rijswijk. We also teach in Ypenburg, Nootdorp, Voorburg, Leidschendam, Den Hoorn, Wateringen and Delfgauw.
